This antedates the meet ing in Charlotte on' the ; 20th of May, 1770, and hence to Salisbury and not to Charlotte, should be accredited the laurels of our first Independence. The census in 1870 was a fiitce, and in 1880 appeared on the census list with a pop ulation of 2,723. The next census was taken in 1883, three years ago, when- we counted 3,408J To-day it is 4,iou, an jDcrc .uxH . cent, over 1835, anj fn increase oi p,- that the per cen 1436 or 52 per cent, over the censusof of crimeis n0 lsirge, 1880. The South Ward also has theji largest number of white people as well as of colored peo- while the -'-North uWartl has the ieast whites and the West Ward the fewest blacks. . - The females outnumber the males by J 141. The South jWard heads the list in both columns, while the West Ward is on the bottom. , The whitea outnumber the colored 521; a little over 00 per cent, of our people are white and a ! littleness than 44 er cent, are ccjlorwl. " - S pains were viiiweu ui oiuimuuc. xveiy square had its enumerator, and on the Ledge of the town where the squares were not clearly defined an enumerator was appointed for ja neighborhood. In regard to age, out enumerators found some difficulty, bjit the exact school age has been ascertained, and of the adults we have 127 people between CO and 70 years of age, of which 82 are white and 45 colored. We have 40 people over 70 years if age, of which 19 are colore 1 and27 are white. This shows thatj we are not in the retrograde and that we are a coporation of no small dimensions. The town is laid offin squares at right angles and is iust one mile square, with four wards. v .TAXATION. i i! The rate of taxation 13 50 cents on th? hundred .dollars worth of property based on a low estimate of value, with $1.50 pall tax, to Tthich must be added the county and btate Taxes given elsewhere. Livincstone College, supported by contributions from the North; is here located nnd has enrolled scholars from all parts of the UnitedBtates, and their buildings are large and handsome, costing many thousands of dollars. The tobacco warehouses are large and commodious, nnd are known as "The Banner," Swink & Thomason; "Iron Clad," J.J. llankins Bros. & Co.; "The Farmers'," McCubbins & Pickler.
